Ripple Fold vs Pinch Pleat Curtains: Which Is Best for Your Home?

Two premium curtain styles, two very different looks

When Nairobi homeowners ask us to make their windows look "finished", the conversation almost always comes down to two headings: ripple fold curtains (also called S-fold or wave curtains) and pinch pleat curtains. Both are tailored, both look far more refined than eyelet or tab-top curtains, and both are popular across Kenya — but they suit different homes, different tracks and different budgets.

This guide explains how each style looks, how much fabric it needs, which tracks it runs on, what drives the price, and which one we usually recommend for different rooms. If you would rather see them in person, our team offers free measurement and consultation in Nairobi.

What are ripple fold (S-fold) curtains?

Ripple fold curtains hang in a continuous, even S-shaped wave from top to bottom. The heading is flat, and the fabric is attached to carriers on a dedicated track that are linked by a spacing cord or tape. That spacing is what creates the perfectly uniform ripple — every fold is identical, whether the curtain is open or closed.

The look is clean, contemporary and architectural. That is why ripple fold curtains in Kenya have become the default choice for modern apartments, new-build villas, offices and boutique hotels. They also stack neatly when open, so you see more window and more light. Learn more on our wave (S-fold) curtains page.

  • Even, flowing S-shaped folds along the full drop
  • Flat, minimal heading — no visible pleats or hooks
  • Glides smoothly and stacks compactly when open
  • Ideal for ceiling-mounted and motorized tracks

What are pinch pleat curtains?

Pinch pleat curtains are gathered at the top into tailored groups of folds — usually double or triple pleats — that are stitched in place and spaced evenly across the heading. Below the stitching, the fabric falls into soft, rounded folds that open up towards the hem.

This is the classic, tailored look you see in traditional homes, formal living and dining rooms and many hotels. Pinch pleat curtains in Kenya work beautifully with heavier fabrics such as velvet, lined linen and blackout, and they can hang from decorative rods with rings or from a standard track with hooks.

  • Structured, hand-finished pleats at the heading
  • Soft, full folds that flare towards the floor
  • Works on decorative rods or standard curtain tracks
  • Suits classic, transitional and formal interiors

Appearance: modern flow vs tailored structure

The easiest way to tell them apart is the top of the curtain. Ripple fold has no visible gathering — the wave starts right at the heading and continues all the way down. Pinch pleat shows distinct, stitched pleats along the top, giving a crisp, "made-to-measure" finish.

If your home has clean lines, large windows, sliding doors or high ceilings, S-fold curtains in Nairobi tend to look more at home. If your interiors lean classic — mouldings, warm woods, statement furniture — pinch pleats add a sense of craftsmanship and formality.

Fabric fullness: how much fabric each style needs

Fullness is the ratio of fabric width to the width of the track or window. It has a big impact on both the look and the cost. We cover this in depth in our curtain fullness guide, but here is a quick comparison.

Ripple fold curtains are usually made at a controlled fullness determined by the carrier spacing on the track — commonly in the region of about 2 to 2.5 times the track width. Because the spacing is fixed, the ripple stays uniform. Pinch pleat curtains are typically made at around 2 to 2.5 times fullness as well, and sometimes more for a very luxurious drape with heavy fabrics.

In practice, the exact fabric quantity depends on your fabric width, pattern repeat, lining and the size of the ripple or pleat you choose. That is why we always measure on site before quoting.

Tracks and hardware

This is the biggest practical difference. Ripple fold curtains need a compatible ripple fold track with special carriers and spacing tape — a standard hook track or a pole will not produce the true S-fold effect. These tracks can be wall- or ceiling-mounted, can be fitted into ceiling recesses for a hidden look, and are the natural partner for motorized curtains.

Pinch pleat curtains are more flexible. They work on standard curtain tracks with hooks, on decorative rods with rings, and on many motorized systems too. If you love the look of a statement rod with finials, pinch pleat is usually the better match. Browse options on our curtain rails and tracks page.

Pricing factors to consider

Rather than a single price, the cost of ripple fold or pinch pleat curtains in Kenya is shaped by a few key factors. Understanding them helps you compare quotations fairly.

  • Fabric choice — sheers, linen, velvet and blackout differ widely in price per metre
  • Fullness — more fullness means more fabric and more tailoring time
  • Lining — blackout or thermal lining adds material and labour
  • Track or rod — ripple fold requires a dedicated ripple fold track; decorative rods vary by finish
  • Window size and ceiling height — longer drops and wider spans need more fabric and hardware
  • Motorization — adding a motor and remote or smart control increases the system cost
  • Installation complexity — ceiling recesses, bay windows and high ceilings need extra work

Which style is best for your home?

There is no single winner — the right choice depends on your space and how you use it. Here is how we typically guide clients across Nairobi:

  • Modern apartments and new-build homes: ripple fold for a clean, minimal look
  • Large sliding doors and floor-to-ceiling glass: ripple fold — it stacks neatly and glides easily
  • Motorized or smart-home setups: ripple fold on a motorized track
  • Classic or formal living and dining rooms: pinch pleat for tailored elegance
  • Bedrooms with heavy blackout fabric: either — pinch pleat for a softer classic feel, ripple fold for modern rooms
  • Homes with decorative rods you want to keep: pinch pleat
  • Layered sheer and blackout combinations: ripple fold sheers with ripple fold or pinch pleat main curtains

Frequently asked questions

Are S-fold and ripple fold curtains the same?

Yes. S-fold, ripple fold and wave curtains are different names for the same style: curtains that hang in even, continuous S-shaped folds on a dedicated track with spaced carriers.

Can I use ripple fold curtains on my existing curtain rod?

Generally no. True ripple fold curtains need a ripple fold track with special carriers and spacing tape. If you want to keep a decorative rod, pinch pleat curtains are usually the better choice.

Which is more expensive, ripple fold or pinch pleat curtains?

It depends on the fabric, fullness, lining and hardware. Ripple fold requires a dedicated track, while pinch pleat involves more hand-finishing at the heading. We give a clear itemised quote after measuring your windows.

Which style works best with motorized curtains?

Ripple fold is the most common choice for motorized systems because it glides smoothly and stacks neatly, though pinch pleat curtains can also be motorized on suitable tracks.

Do you install ripple fold and pinch pleat curtains across Nairobi?

Yes. Bliston Enterprises measures, tailors and installs both styles across Nairobi and surrounding areas, with free on-site measurement.
