Blackout vs Dim-Out vs Sunscreen — Which Blind Fabric Should You Choose?

When you're shopping for blinds in Nairobi — whether roller blinds, zebra blinds or roman blinds — the single biggest decision isn't the colour. It's the fabric family: blackout, dim-out or sunscreen. Each behaves completely differently with light, heat and privacy, and choosing wrong is the number-one regret we hear from homeowners.

Here's how to pick the right one for every room.

Blackout fabric is coated on the back so no visible light passes through. Rolled or drawn fully, it delivers true cinema-level darkness — perfect for bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms, hotel rooms and Airbnb listings where guests expect to sleep in complete darkness.

In Nairobi's bright equatorial light, blackout is the only fabric that will properly let you sleep in on a Saturday morning. It also reduces heat gain through the window, which matters in west-facing rooms during dry season.

Trade-off: when closed you have zero natural light. That's why blackout is usually specified for bedrooms, not living rooms.

Dim-out fabrics block around 90–95% of light without a full blackout coating. The room feels dark and cosy, but a very soft glow still comes through the fabric weave.

Dim-out is the smart middle ground for guest bedrooms, kids' rooms and TV rooms. You get near-blackout privacy and a much more forgiving feel than pitch black — you can still see enough to walk around when the blinds are closed.

Sunscreen roller blinds are ideal for living rooms, home offices, restaurants and any commercial space where a view matters — apartments overlooking the city, offices in Westlands, cafes in Karen. They are not suitable for bedrooms because at night, with interior lights on, people outside can see in.

The best-designed rooms in Nairobi almost always layer two fabrics: a sunscreen roller (day) plus a blackout roller or a blackout curtain (night). You get the perfect balance of view, glare control and true darkness for sleep. Zebra blinds are essentially a built-in version of this idea, alternating sheer and solid bands on a single blind.
